ANNOUNCING: HEVAJRA Drub-chö/Drub-chen

NOTICE NEW ** August, 18th – 25th 2018 **

Milarepa Retreat Zentrum, Germany

INVITATION TO ALL BUDDHISTS

with interest in the Marpa Ngok Transmission of the Kagyu Lineage in general and specifically practises of Hevajra (9 deity) and Nairatmya (15 deity).

Here is an edited video from the announcement

by HH Drikung Kyabgön Thinley Lhundrub, July 9th 2017, at Milerapa Retreat Zentrum, Germany.

AWARENESS: This website is focused on a very narrow field of specific practises among the vast richness of the Vajrayana and Buddhist Tantra. Totally aware of that, and aware that all what is mentioned here on this website is indepted to and rests on the FOUNDATION of the DHARMA from LORD BUDDHA SAKYAMUNI, the holy one from the Sakya-klan. Everything on this website rests on the Buddha Dharma in its whole, with the three Yanas: Hinayana/Theravadin, Mahayana and Vajrayana. Also we are aware of the manifolded Dharma-activity in all the various traditions of the Buddha-Dharma situated and having its on-set in different traditions, different practises within the Buddhist richness, and having a modern or a traditionalist approach. IN ALL THIS WE REJOICE, AND FEEL THANKFULLNES.

Activity

Here under ‚activity‘, we will try to make information available about activities going on, all over the world, concerning the Marpa-Ngok tradition, as well as specifically the two practises of the Hevajra 9 deity mandala and the Nairatmya 15 deity mandala, as they are giving in the Marpa-Ngok tradition.

We will not in any way be able to give a complete picture of what is going on all over the world, but we will share was has come to our attention and is somehow connected to the focus of this website. May it be of benefit. Sarwa Mangalam.

IN GENERAL: The Marpa Ngok practises have spread to most Kagyu lineages. First through activity and commentaries of the Ngok lineageholders (approx. 1070-1450). And later especially with the work of the Great Kongtryl Lodro Thaye (1813-1899), manifested in the ‚Kagyu Mantra Treasure‘ (Kagyu Ngagdzö). But already in the 19th century they were only few who really practised them, and the living transmission of these practises, as well as commentaries on them, seemed only to live in such collections as f.inst. Kagyu Ngagdzö.

SPECIFICALLY: The Hevajra and Nairatmya practises have been upheld in some traditions. Most known is the tibetan buddhist Sakya tradition. The Kagyu tradition had a strong focus on Hevajra and Nairatmya during the time of Marpa (1012-1097), and the Ngok lineage (from around 1050 to 1450), but later it was less emphasised and was overshaded by the focus on Chakrasamvara and Vajrayogini. Also the Drikung lineage had focus on the Hevajra for some time, and the first Chungtsang (1595-1659) wrote texts for a ‚Co-emergent Hevajra‘ which still today is passed on in The Drikung Lineage.

The special transmission of practises on Hevajra (Yab-ka) and Nairatmya (Yum-ka), that was compiled from 2006 to 2011 and also after that by HH Drikung Kyabgön Thrinley Lhundrup, is tracking back to Marpa. Many of the newly compiled practise texts are based on texts that re-surfaced from 1999-2006 from Drepung Monastary and other places, thus reviling special things as texts with notes of Marpa himself. It is possible to see the different features of the Hevajra practise, in the different lineages, even revealing differences withing the Kagyu-lineages. Besides the special features of the practise texts, then the living transmission of these specific Hevajra practises of the Mar-Ngok transmission goes through great Karma Kagyu Masters as 4th Shamar (1453-1524), 8th Situpa (1700-1774) and Kongtryl Lodro Thaye (1813-1899), and great Drikung Masters as 1st Chetsang (1590-1654) and 1st Chungtsang (1595-1659), and 6th Chetsang (1886-1943) and Regent Thritsab Gyabra (1924-1979).

Background & History

This page will be updated in the near future (July 12th 2017).

Mar-Ngok.org was launched in the blessing of the fullmoon day 9th of July 2017 (Tibetan calender: 15th day, 5th month) by the wish of H.H. Drikung Kyabgön Thrinley Lhundrub.

The motivation of H.H. Drikung Kyabgön Thrinley Lhundrub is:

1) establishing Marpa in his proper place within the Kagyu Lineage, thus using the force of history.

2) as well as revitalizing the transmissions passed from Marpa to his pupil Ngog Chöku Dorje, especially with focus on 2 of the Ngok mandalas: the Hevajra (9 deity) and Nairatmya (15 deity).

***************************************************************************

The VISION & MISSION regarding MAR-LUG HEVAJRA/NAIRATMYA.

One of many activities of H.H. Drikung Kyabgön Thrinley Lhundrup

• Revive this original tradition and re-establish it in all Drikung monasteries,

• Return Marpa to his proper place of honor in the lineage,

• Bring awareness by taking the force of history into account that, originating with Marpa, the Kagyu tradition has used the Hevajra Tantra for working with the generation stage and, as is done today, has used the Six Yogas of Naropa for completion stage.

Manifesting 2 of “THE 7 MANDALAS OF NGOK” in this world FOR THE NEW MILLENIUM with the transmission that has mainly been carried through the NGOK family and the DRIKUNG KAGYU LINEAGE – as well as carried by Lamas from other lineages, like 4th Shamarpa (1453-1524), 8th Tai Situpa (1700-1774), and Jamgön Kongtrul Lodrö Thayé (1813-1899), and today is being passed on to sentient beings by H.H. the 37th Drikung Kyabgön, the 7th Chetsang Rinpoche, Könchog Tenzin Kunzang Trinley Lhundrup:

Nairatmya 15-deity [mandala] (Wyl. bdag med lha mo bco lnga)

Hevajra[-Nairatmya] 9-deity [mandala] (Wyl. kye’i rdo rje’i lha gu’i)

Since the practice of the Hevajra deity itself is elaborate and time consuming, H.H. Drikung Kyabgön Thrinely Lhundrup chose (in 2009, 2010, and 2016) to bestow the empowerment and transmission of the mandala of Vajra Nairatmya, the consort of Hevajra (i.e. the practice of Nairatmya 15-deity [mandala]) to disciples in the Western world.

Per January 2017, perhaps H.H. will compile and give a 16-armed Hevajra with 8 yogini-practice in the future.

Per 9th of July 2017, H.H. announced this publically at the Milarepa Retreat Zentrum, Germany.

This will be given Friday, 17th August to Saturday 25th August 2018, at Milarepa Retreat Zentrum: Wang, explanation and a 5 day retreat with Drub-chö on Hevajra 9 deity practise.

Since 2009, His Holiness has bestowed the Great Empowerment of Nairatmya 15-deity [mandala], as well as the Great Empowerment of Hevajra[-Nairatmya] 9-deity [mandala], with both empowerment texts compiled based on the Marpa-Ngok Tradition.

In August 2018 H.H. Drikung Kyabgön Thrinley Lhundrub will bestow the Wang and explain the practise of Hevajra 9 Deity practise at Milarepa Retreat Zentrum, Germany.

ABOUT THE TEACHINGS ON THE TANTRA (She.gyud):Until recently, both of Marpa’s commentaries on the Hevajra Tantra & Vajrapanjara Tantra were rarely taught, as their contents were considered too precious to be openly disclosed. But in the interest of reviving the Hevajra-Nairatmya practice within the Drikung Kagyu, H.H. is now compassionately and skillfully revealing the contents of the two commentaries as he deems fit.

ABOUT THE MEDITATION ON NAIRATMYA 15 DEITY PRACTISE (Yum-ka):Furthermore, in The Life-tree of the Vajrapanjara (Wyl. gur gyi srog shing) —Marpa’s commentary on the Vajrapanjara Tantra; an exclusive explanatory tantra of the Hevajra Tantra — it is stated that the sadhana of Nairatmya is an exceptionally swift method for attaining the siddhis. Hence H.H. compiled the generation stage Nairatmya sadhana based on the 4th chapter of the Vajrapanjara Tantra, and also drew from the Ngok tradition and supplemental parts from the Kagyu Ngak Dzöd (Wyl. bka‘ brgyud sngags mdzod), the Kagyu Treasury of Tantric Instructions compiled by Jamgön Kongtrul Lodrö Thayé (1813-1899).

ABOUT THE MEDITATION ON HEVAJRA 9 DEITY PRACTISE (Yab-ka):From 2006 to 2012 HH Drikung Kyabgön Thrinley Lhundrup several texts connected to the Yab-ka [The teachings on the male-part]: i.e. 2 short daily practises, a middle-long one for one practise, and a long on for Drub-chens in larger gatherings.

The transmission from HH Drikung Kyabgön runs back through Jamgon Kongtryl Lodro Thaye the Great (1813-1899). It is worth while mentioning that the practising texts of the Kagyu Ngagdzö are more aligned with the wording from the 4th Shamar (1453-1524). The practising texts that are compiled by HH Drikung Kyabgön Thrinley Lhundrup are more aligned with the words of Marpa, as they are based on the recently re-surfaced texts, from 1999-2006, which contain original manuscrips dating back to Marpa.

Note: There is another Hevajra transmission within the Drikung Kagyu lineage through the 1st Chungtsang Rigdzin Chödrak which is called the Co-Emergent Hevajra.

Text & Study (25th Aug 2017: update on 5 topics, see below)

Under this topic ‚Text-study‘ there will – in the not so far future (written 12th of July 2017) – be possible to find descriptions, links, articles about more in depth background information connected to the Mar-Ngok lineage generally, and the specific TWO MANDALAS of the Ngok tradition. The Ngok tradition is sometimes described by the ‚The 7 Mandalas of Ngok‘). And sometimes there is a mentioning of 13 mandala of Marpa. The SPECIFIC TWO MANDALAS of the Mar-Ngok tradition, that is delt with here is the Hevajra 9 deity mandala, and the Nairatmya 15 deity mandala.

The general information about the Mar-Ngok lineage will be articles on f.inst. Marpa, writen as a university master in Tibetology by Cecile Ducher from France. It could also be university articles about Ngoks-lineage like Marco Walthers article about the Ngok Kagyu from the Ludwig-Maximilians Universität München, 2016. It could also be a Ph.D. about the Ngok tradition.

More specifically this sub-page will also adress the texts specially connected to the compilations made by H.H. Drikung Kyabgön Thrinley Lhundrub during 2006 to 2011 and also later. Some of these texts are translated to english, some also to german. There are translations on the way in french and taiwanese. Here will also be able to follow ongoing translations-works-in progress.

Mar-ngok.org was launched by Carl Djung and Jette Aarestrup Mortensen the 12th of July 2017 at the wish of H.H. Drikung Kyabgön Thrinley Lhundrub, in connection with the official announcement given at fullmoon, 9th of July 2017, where His Holiness appointed the Milarepa Retreat Zentrum, Germany as the site, where there will be annual drubchös [sometimes drubchen] on either Hevajra or Nairatmya.

Since then, the Mar-ngok.org website is administered by Carl and Jette, together with a group of practioners from Drikung Kagyu and Karma Kagyu under the guidance and blessing of H.H. Drikung Kyabgön Thrinley Lhundrub. In November 2017 a group of 3 people were appointed to form a working-comittee, and it is H.H. Drikung Kyabgön Thrinley Lhundrups wish, that the site is regurlarly updated with news etc.

Also from the launching of the website, it has been envisioned to have the website on several languages. By the blessing of His Holiness, from november 2017 to february 2018 the first steps were taken to have www.mar-ngok.org in 7 languages: english, chinese, tibetan, vietnamese, russian, spanish, and german.

This site is not a scolarly or 100 % professional perfect site, but a site aimed to give information and inspiration. The precision and accuracy of the site is limited by our abilities, time and ressources, but are giving to the best of our abilities at that present time. The sites pages will be updated and changed as things develop. May it be of benefit. Sarwa Mangalam.

We have a scolar connected to the website to ensure a certain and necassary standard, but that person is not always available, and therefor does not have any responsibility for any errors

The people that administer this page are mostly volunteers, but we are seeking to have some of the work sponsored. We are only online in connection with this website in shorter periods or rarely. Therefore the range of emails that wil be answered are few, and the range of topics that are adressed are limited, and specifically connected to the purpose of this website. We thank you for your understanding in advance.

P.S. This website is focused on a very narrow field of specific practises among the vast richness of the Vajrayana and Buddhist Tantra. P.P.S. This website also likes to remind ourselfs about treating all representations of the Buddha Dharma and of Bodhisattva activity with respect and awareness. Therefor we have an awareness about treating all print-outs of this website, and Dharma Teachings generally with respect, and seeing to that pages, that are to be disposed of, are best done so by fire.

P.P.P.S. And as something very important, we at this web-site are moved by and inspired by, that these practises are still connected to an both ANCIENT and also LIVING TRADITION of TRANSMISSION, meaning, that the understanding and benefit/realisation of the practises only comes by meditation (training) and daily life awareness (more training), and not just through mere logic and study or just „one-time-reading“ and quick „Aha-experiences“ and „momentary“ „deep insights.

From this also follows, that the doing of the practises mentioned here in this web-site-univers, and even the study of the texts, actually need three prerequisites and an additional essential pre-requisite.

The three often mentioned prerequisites are: Wang (empowerment), Lung (reading/permission), Tri (explanation). And the essential prerequisite is ofcourse, a qualified Vajramaster/Lama/Guru/Spiritual Guide, and also connected to that, and in that blessing, some Vajra brothers and sisters, who one can share knowlegde (not experience) with concerning the „how to do“ the practises, the rituals and meditations.
